Mrs. Brown, a teacher at Henry Park Elementary, told hosts Thorne and Kaden on the "Success Stories in Subban County" podcast that she has taught at the school for 19 years and that patience, caring and listening are central to her work with students.
The interview, part of Season 2, Episode 13, opened with hosts Thorne and Kaden thanking MSD Steuben County for a grant that helped produce the podcast; the amount of the grant was not specified. Mrs. Brown said she began at Henry Park as a volunteer while her children attended the school and later took a job there because she enjoyed being around the students.
"I have been at Henry Park for 19 years, and I started here when my kids went here," Mrs. Brown said. She told the hosts she volunteered with the parent-teacher organization before becoming a member of the school staff.
Asked about prior work, Mrs. Brown said she had been a stay-at-home mother before teaching. She identified her parents as early influences, saying they taught her values and "the right way to be a good citizen."
When asked what she considers her biggest success, Mrs. Brown said, "My kids are my biggest success story." On the qualities needed for success working with children, she said, "I think you need to be caring, absolutely, when you work with kids. And, you have to be a good listener." She added that enjoying the job is important: "enjoy what you're doing is the biggest."
Mrs. Brown described patience as the principal obstacle she faces in the classroom. "You need a lot of patience. Sometimes that's hard to have patience," she said. She also said she enjoys seeing students learn, grow and get to know themselves.
Concluding the interview, Mrs. Brown advised listeners that success comes from doing something you love: "Success, I think, is all about doing something you love and then enjoying it. And when you enjoy your job, you're better at it." The hosts thanked Mrs. Brown for participating and summarized that patience, kindness and caring are keys to success.
The interview was recorded at Henry Park Elementary as part of the podcast series; no further action or formal decisions were recorded.
