Sumner County trustees approve interim pay for acting director, move hiring process to subcommittee and elect officers

At the May 14 Sumner County Library Board meeting trustees approved interim pay for Kristen McAfee, authorized the chair to sign paperwork so she may be paid, and moved the hiring process for library employees into the subcommittee process. The board also elected officers for the coming term.

Board members said McAfee was serving as interim director while the board posted the permanent director position. "She was officially named the interim director; she should be compensated for the fact that she's doing that job as well as her job until it is filled," said Board member Jackie when requesting the item be placed on the agenda. The board approved the interim pay and later voted to allow the chair to sign the paperwork so payroll actions could be completed.

On personnel procedure, trustees moved the hiring process for library employees to the subcommittee process so the board could develop consistent interim rules before adopting a written policy. The motion to refer hiring procedures to the subcommittee passed by voice vote.

In officer elections, trustees selected Joanna as chair, Mike (as vice chair), Pam (treasurer) and Kaylee Wilson (secretary). The board conducted the officer votes by nomination and voice vote; several members recorded individual opposition or abstentions during the chair nomination but the slate carried.

What this means: McAfee will receive interim compensation while serving in the acting director role and the hiring process for library employees will be handled by a subcommittee that will bring recommendations back to the full board. The board said it will post the permanent director vacancy and proceed with standard application and interview steps.
