CRA highlights Ballpark murals call, Spark ribbon‑cutting and Gallivan hires

Salt Lake City Community Reinvestment Agency staff briefed the board on several neighborhood and cultural projects, including a call for murals in the Ballpark neighborhood, the ribbon cutting for the Spark housing project, and staffing at the Gallivan Center.
The CRA and the Arts Council issued a “call for walls” to commission at least 10 murals in the Ballpark neighborhood. Staff said property and business owners can apply to have murals on their properties and will be paired with artists from the Arts Council’s prequalified pool. Applications were open until May 15, staff said.
Staff also recapped the May 7 ribbon cutting for the Spark, a redevelopment on the former motel site that the agency previously purchased and prepared for redevelopment. Brinshore Development was selected for the project; staff said the project includes a mix of affordable units and units up to four bedrooms, with affordability levels ranging from about 20 percent to 80 percent of area median income. Staff said some units will be supported by vouchers and that some rents in the program are “as low as $300 a month.” Neighborhood House, staff said, will provide a residency preference for nearby residents, and staff reported they were close to confirming Star of India as a first‑floor commercial tenant.
Staff also announced hiring at the CRA and Gallivan Center. Tawny Barker started April 9 as a new CRA hire from the city of West Jordan; staff noted her prior public‑sector and private‑sector experience. Jessica Ribbons was introduced as a new Gallivan Center event manager; staff said her previous role included event management at Daybreak.
Board members encouraged mural participation in the Ballpark area and asked for future updates on a separate RDA property near the old DI site and the final alignment for a planned S‑line extension; staff said work with UTA and transportation remained ongoing.
