Sunbury City staff said the American Legion will hold a short Memorial Day service at J.R. Smith Park on Memorial Day, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a procession to Memorial Park cemetery that is expected to conclude around 11 a.m.
The city will provide bleachers and electrical service for the event; staff said those items are scheduled to be delivered about 8 a.m. Police and fire personnel have been briefed on the route and staging, staff added. The remarks were presented to the Sunbury Events & Commemorations Committee as information only because the meeting did not have a quorum at the time the item was introduced.
Committee members and staff told one another they expect construction work at J.R. Smith Park next year and plan to discuss alternative locations with veterans organizations for 2026. City staff said whether a portion of J.R. Smith could still host events next year will depend on the contractor and construction sequencing.
No formal action or vote was taken; the committee received the update for planning purposes and directed staff to continue coordinating with veterans groups on potential alternate sites for future services.
