Nancy Garcia, director of SCAN's residential services, presented an overview of a women's recovery home and affiliated community programs to the Drug and Alcohol Commission, describing program capacity, intake procedures and linkages to mental-health and employment services.
Garcia said the residential program provides a structured daily schedule and recovery-focused values and that the stay is "up to 90 days depending on individual progress." She said residential clients receive intake assessments, physical and mental-health screening, random urine analyses, weekly individual counseling, group counseling and daily psychoeducation classes. "We do provide weekly 1 on 1 counseling sessions for our clients, Group counseling and psychoeducation courses or classes take place every day," she said.
Garcia said the women's facility has 12 beds and reported that two beds were available at the time of the presentation. She described linkages to psychiatric care (including access to an in-person psychiatrist), rapid HIV and hepatitis C testing, legal support that has helped reduce citations for clients who complete the program, and efforts to connect residents to GED or workforce-enrollment services. Garcia said staff help clients prepare resumes and attend interviews where possible, and coordinate with probation officers and CPS case workers as needed.
The presenter described family-visit policies, noting children's visits are allowed on Sundays and that parenting courses are integrated so clients can practice new skills during visits. Garcia also outlined community programs delivered by SCAN: weekly caregiver sessions, a family-event "fiesta" on the last Tuesday of each month, youth group activities and Thursday summer-camp-style sessions that lead into treatment group activities. She announced an open house at the Hendricks office (address given verbally) from 5 to 7 p.m. and said materials would be distributed to commission members.
Commissioners asked about capacity and waiting lists; Garcia said the women's facility has 12 beds and there was no waiting list at the time of the meeting. She also noted coordination with male residential facilities and youth residential services operated by the same provider.
The presentation concluded with a request that commissioners and stakeholders refer eligible people to SCAN and that staff follow up with contact information and printed materials after the meeting.
