The Laredo Drug and Alcohol Commission voted to create a subcommittee to develop a summer awareness campaign targeting youth safety, parental involvement and prevention of underage drinking and social hosting.
Chair Collin Guevias proposed a campaign to reach youth and parents during the summer months and asked agencies to share available programs. He noted recent incidents and concerns about after parties, underage drinking and risks related to unsupervised adolescents. "What are these kids doing? What are the potential dangers and how we can keep them safe?" the chair asked during discussion.
Commissioners discussed partnering with local law enforcement, Crime Stoppers and school-based programs and proposed materials including PSAs and scripts. One member noted the commission had already partnered with Crime Stoppers and would use the tip line to report known parties; staff also suggested creating materials that could include commission members wearing outreach shirts in recorded PSAs.
A motion to create a subcommittee to strategize and develop the campaign passed (motion moved by Jesse and seconded by Yvette). The commission set a target to have a strategy developed within four months and asked staff to coordinate PSA scripting and partner outreach.
Commissioners emphasized that the campaign should include education on social hosting penalties and criminal charges for providing alcohol to minors and recommended outreach to parents, caregivers and youth-serving programs. The subcommittee will report proposals and draft materials back to the full commission for approval.
