Westmont discusses text-to-911 rollout and next steps for new fire facility

At the May 15 meeting, the Village of Westmont highlighted two public-safety items: the availability of text-to-911 and next steps on planning for a new fire facility.
Trustee Johanna Guzzo, chair of the Fire & Public Safety Committee, said residents can now text 911 if they are unable to call, while callers are still encouraged to call when possible. Guzzo noted more information is available on the village website.
Guzzo and Chief Riley reviewed a May 13 tour and presentation intended to show residents the condition of the existing fire station and the department’s operational needs. Guzzo said the event was streamed and a recording posted to the Village of Westmont YouTube channel for public review. She said the committee discussed next steps and that additional information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Chief Riley told the board the village’s relationship with Norcom (the regional public-safety communications provider) has been reopened for contract negotiations and billing issues that had persisted were addressed (separate agenda item). Board members asked for clarity on next steps for a replacement facility; Guzzo said the committee will report back with more details.
No formal funding vote or construction contract was approved at the meeting; the board’s action was informational and to direct staff and the committee to continue planning and community outreach.
