District 3 Councilwoman Helen Zenobia Willis said Fifth Third Bank has requested a zoning modification for 5290 Campbellton Fairburn Road that would allow development of the last vacant parcel between Thompson Road and Hall Road.
"This will transform the last vacant parcel between Thompson Road and Hall Road," Willis said during remarks marking the city's eighth anniversary. She described the bank as "helping communities thrive since 1858" and said its presence would "bring new financial access and economic opportunity" to the area.
Willis also gave updates on recent and completed city facility projects. "The renovated natatorium is now safer and more inclusive," she said, noting the installation of chairlifts intended to help elderly residents and individuals with disabilities use the facility. She described the new welcome center at 4800 Campbell Drive as "more than a building," saying it includes coworking space, room for a farmers market and landscaping designed to invite community use.
Willis framed these items as part of a broader push to eliminate blight and finish long-delayed projects, saying the work is intended to create opportunities on blocks she described as long neglected. She said development in her district should be "with us and for us," and that the city is keeping a commitment to complete promised projects.
The remarks did not include details about funding sources, timing for the zoning decision, or any formal motions or votes on the Fifth Third Bank request. No formal actions or approvals were announced during the remarks.
The items Willis raised — the bank's zoning request, natatorium accessibility upgrades and the welcome center — were presented as updates and proposals rather than final decisions. Further discussion, staff reports or official agenda items would be needed to move the zoning request or other projects to formal city action.
