During the public comment period, Shauna Yellowkini told trustees she had two requests: increase funding and staff for the Native American Student Services Department to provide more tutoring and tribal cultural instruction, and revise school breakfasts and lunches to reduce refined carbohydrates and increase lean, unprocessed meats and vegetables.
Yellowkini said she was unsure whether the menu and services applied districtwide but asked trustees to consider those changes for next year. "I have 2 requests...more funding and for staff and resources be allocated to the Native American Student Services Department so that more tutoring and tribal cultural knowledge is being taught," she said, adding, "Second, that school breakfasts and lunches be revised to reflect a healthy, more balanced diet with less refined carbohydrates and more lean unprocessed meats and vegetables for next year, please." She specifically mentioned Paxton as a school where she had noticed an increase in processed foods.
The board's public comment rules were read before speakers; the chair noted this portion is for the public to address the board as a body and not for board responses, and comments are limited to three minutes. There was no recorded board response or action on the requests during the meeting.
