Moreland trustees hear Latimer student leaders; superintendent reports on music awards and MEF fundraising

Student leaders from Latimer School led the Pledge of Allegiance and described activities intended to build belonging at their campus, and the Moreland School District superintendent delivered a report highlighting district recognition, music program awards and fundraising by the MEF.
The students — including Iris Salem of Latimer’s leadership group — each introduced themselves before leading the flag salute. “Something I like about leadership is that we get to lead people to the right direction, plan out school events, and just really make our school a better place,” Iris Salem said. Students described lunchtime competitions, grade-level “college teams” and schoolwide events they credited with increasing students’ sense of belonging.
The superintendent’s report recapped district news and upcoming dates. “Hot off the presses, the ACSA EdCal newspaper comes out weekly … and lo and behold, once again, Latimer is in the news,” the superintendent said, citing the Association of California School Administrators’ EdCal publication. The superintendent also said each Moreland school has refreshed logos and that the district is updating enrollment-center materials to be more welcoming.
The district’s music program was a central item in the superintendent’s remarks. The report said nearly 70 students from the district’s three middle schools attended a Disneyland trip with six parent chaperones and three music directors; temperatures that day reached about 98 degrees. Students also performed at an event at Great America where EDS and Latimer ensembles won division awards: EDS jazz band (first place, excellent), EDS Symphonic Strings (first place, superior), EDS Symphonic Band (first place, superior) and Latimer Symphonic Orchestra (first place, excellent). The superintendent also said the combined EDS–Latimer group received an esprit de corps award for behavior and respect shown during performances in the park.
On fundraising, the superintendent reported a meeting with Anna Chan, identified in the remarks as the current MEF president, and said the MEF (as described in the meeting) provided more than $189,000 in support to district programs this year. The superintendent said the MEF will vote on next year’s budget at its June meeting.
The superintendent closed by listing upcoming events and dates: a retirement celebration scheduled for Tuesday, June 3 at 3:30 p.m. in the boardroom; the district’s last day of school on June 6; and eighth-grade promotion ceremonies on June 5 (Latimer, 9 a.m.) and June 6 (EDS, 9 a.m.; MMS, 10:30 a.m.).
On routine business, the board approved the meeting agenda and the consent calendar by voice vote. The record shows the motions were called, a voice “aye” was taken, and the items passed; the transcript does not list a roll-call vote with individual member votes.
The meeting moved to closed session after announcements.
