Planning: Nathan Belger, planning director, said permit activity has risen from earlier in the year and is approaching 2016'2018 levels, though single-family permits remain low. Belger said the board and council will soon see a fence code amendment at the council meeting and that the board may see more encroachment requests as a result. He also noted several building projects preparing to start construction, including a new gym branded ImpactX between Crossroads Bank and the new pediatric dental office, and a significant parking-lot expansion for Bridal Miller on Rayburn Road.
Parks and pools: A parks staff member reported that the municipal pool is circulating and expected to be ready for Memorial Day weekend; brick work was scheduled that week and staff said they were still securing enough Red Cross lifeguard certification classes, which have diminished in availability compared with last year. The parks staff asked for board attendance at the skate-park ribbon cutting scheduled for Saturday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
IT and facilities: An IT staff member (Terry) reported work on a domain controller upgrade that would require a scheduled outage on Thursday morning for virtual machine and controller upgrades; Terry also reported building a server rack at the new jail and coordinating fiber installation.
Public works/wastewater: A public works staff member (Mike Shoto) said the city completed cleaning aeration tank diffusers (about 1,000 diffusers) and reassembled a secondary valve; staff also said they responded in writing to an IDEM (Indiana Department of Environmental Management) letter on the long-term control plan on May 2 and had not yet received a reply.
Other: Belger said historic tours produced by Columbia City Connect and the historical museum drew 34 attendees, including WBOI public radio and Indiana Humanities. Staff also said the city is coordinating with INDOT on possible road access for a property north of Walmart.
