Lofts Community Partnership asked Millersville Borough Council to consider a $200,000 request from federal Community Development Block Grant funds to renovate 100 East Charlotte Street into a community resource facility.
At a public hearing Monday evening, a Lofts representative said the renovated building would serve as "a community resource facility and a hub of resources that we will then work out into the community from that location." The presentation described complementary fundraising and a separate local-shares grant application filed earlier in partnership with the borough.
The group described how the site will host a neighbor-choice food pantry. "Right now, we impact over 2,700 individuals in the Penn Manor community," the presenter said, adding that the pantry serves about "800 unique households." She said the pantry encourages weekly visits so residents select only the items they need: "Most of the time people come to see what we have, and they don't take what they don't need." The group said other local pantries consult them on this model.
No formal council action or vote on the CDBG request was recorded during the meeting. The Lofts representative also invited council and residents to view a building rendering and to an upcoming garden luncheon and a September golf outing supporting the food pantry.
Council members asked clarifying questions during the hearing but did not move to approve or deny funding at the meeting. The item was presented to gather public questions and to place the project on the docket for future consideration.
The Lofts representative left printed materials with the council prior to the general meeting and thanked members for their time. The borough provided no estimate at the hearing of when a funding decision on the CDBG request would be scheduled.
