Patrick Altendorf of Walls Design Collective, representing Life Church, said the team began coordinating with city staff and ODOT last August and that ODOT approved the driveway permit on Feb. 7 after submission in January. Tim Knox of Life Church described the access change as a pair of right-turn in and right-turn out movements on the southeast side of the property intended to split departing vehicles between two exits and reduce congestion on Yukon Parkway during busy service times: “what we'd like to do is add, a right turn in and a right turn out on the southeast side of our property on Main Street.”
Commissioners questioned design details, including the turn-bay width and drainage. Altendorf said the turn bay was revised to 15 feet to conform with the city detail and that drainage was designed with headwalls and an under-drive conveyance pipe. A commissioner with past ODOT experience and a former law enforcement member both described longstanding congestion and near-accident conditions at the church during peak service times and supported the proposal. A motion to approve the driveway permit passed by voice vote; the commission did not specify additional conditions in the motion at the meeting.
The commission noted the change is the product of coordination among the applicant, city engineering staff and ODOT; the approval allows the applicant to proceed to planning commission and city council for subsequent approvals as required. The commission’s action at the meeting was limited to the permit recommendation; final construction and any further approvals remain subject to city and ODOT processes.
