Shakopee High among 29 U.S. schools chosen to stage 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'

Shakopee High School has been selected as one of 29 schools nationwide authorized to perform the high‑school edition of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, district activities staff and students told the board May 12.

Andy Brown, activities director, highlighted the theatre program’s preparations and said the production is technically demanding and has rallied students across arts and communications, technical theatre and stage management. Students and staff described sold‑out performances (the Friday night Thrust Stage show is reported as sold out) and extensive student contributions to set, house crest designs and stagecraft.

Students and stage managers on the program described donated technical pieces — including 3‑D printed props donated by Stratasys — and creative collaboration across the district’s academies. "This is a really technically complex and challenging show, so our students have really risen to that occasion," one student participant said during the presentation.

Why it matters: selection for a licensed production of this scale raises the program’s visibility, offers advanced technical and performance experience for students, and provides community arts offerings. District staff recommended community members secure tickets soon; administrators said other weekend performances still had available seats at the time of the meeting.

Performances are scheduled for the coming weekend; the district will manage box office and outreach for community attendance.
