The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on May 20 to award $5,000 from gaming revenues to support the county’s Family Treatment Court. SHIP (identified in the meeting as "SHIP Sulin Human Investment Partnership") will act as fiscal agent and manage the funds on the program’s behalf.
Alyssa DeRose, the Family Treatment Court coordinator, described the program’s mission as “keeping families together, family reunification, and assisting parents with support and, offering community resources through, substance abuse, substance use disorder, treatment.” DeRose said the court meets weekly and that the team includes a local judge, HHS case managers and treatment providers working to identify barriers to recovery and promote lasting behavior change.
Erin McLarty, programs director at SHIP, said SHIP would handle the money for the program and ensure funds are spent according to program needs. McLarty told the board: “we are here on their behalf to manage the dollars and help them spend them efficiently and according to the needs of the program.”
Program staff outlined likely uses for the funds: incentives for recovery milestones, limited housing support such as deposits, transportation assistance, celebrations at program graduation and family‑oriented sober activities. DeRose said tangible items such as basic household supplies can make reunification feasible when a parent secures housing.
Supervisor Nelson moved to provide $5,000 from gaming funds to SHIP for Family Treatment Court support; Supervisor Dietrich seconded. The motion passed 5-0. The board did not attach additional restrictions; SHIP will administer the funds and report as required.
Supporters said the funding helps families maintain recovery milestones, supports reunification efforts and offsets small but critical barriers to stability for parents in the program.
