Hurd Barrington students showcase IFT grant projects: hydroponics, chick hatching and farmers market

Hurd Barrington Elementary presented grant‑funded classroom projects and the school’s college and career readiness program at the May 12 board meeting.
Guede VanRuler, principal at Hurd Barrington, introduced the school’s second‑grade team and described the school’s work with an IFT grant. Teacher Mrs. Van Dyke said the staff received an IFT grant through CTA for “well over $10,000” that funded hydroponic growing systems, equipment to hatch chickens, and a rock garden; the grant supported activities culminating in a school farmers market.
Second‑grade students described hatchery projects, plant growth schedules and how the hydroponic systems produced edible flowers and herbs used at a school salad day. School counselor Irma Hernandez outlined the school’s College and Career Readiness program, which includes classroom lessons on careers, a UC Merced campus tour for fifth graders, career days and a college/career spirit week. Hernandez listed community partners who participated in Career Days, including the Newman Fire Department, Patterson Grocery Outlet, BMO Bank, Westside Community Health District, Golden Valley Health Centers, BWM Grooming, Turlock Irrigation District, Morning Star Trucking, Amazon and Civil Air Patrol.
Students and staff invited the public to watch student presentations and noted the hands‑on activities were intended to build skills, vocabulary and college‑going aspirations among elementary students.
