Committee adjusts solid-waste and convenience-center lines amid rising per-ton costs and dumpster replacements

Committee members noted that the county’s waste disposal per-ton charge has risen (staff said the county previously paid about $37 per ton and the fee had moved to $50 per ton), and one commissioner proposed moving the line from $36,000 to $70,000 to create additional padding. Staff said the current contract rate of $50 per ton is guaranteed for five years and that if necessary a modest budget amendment later would cover any shortfall. The committee approved the increase after a motion by Commissioner Atwood with a second by Commissioner Ford.
On convenience-center operations, staff said roll-off dumpsters are being replaced at a rate of roughly eight to 10 per year because of loss or damage and that roll-offs will be chargeable to businesses. The committee approved the convenience-center budget items as presented.
