Pembroke Park’s commission on May 14 approved an interlocal agreement with Broward County for building inspection services and gave the town manager authority to supplement county help with outside vendors as needed to reduce a backlog of permit reviews and inspections.
The manager described a significant backlog in permit issuance and inspection capacity and requested the authority to use county inspection services and, if necessary, outside contractors to accelerate permit issuance and reduce delays. He asked the commission to authorize the manager to negotiate the interlocal agreement and to include language permitting procurement of private inspection firms in addition to county services.
The commission voted to approve the manager’s request and to authorize the manager to enter the interlocal agreement, including the amendment that allows the manager to procure outside vendors. Town staff said the work will focus on building-permit plan reviews and inspection services, not code‑enforcement inspections related to violations.
The commission noted the urgency of reducing the backlog to keep development moving and to ensure municipal timelines and grant deadlines are met. The town manager told commissioners the goal is to bring permit issuance and inspections back to ordinary timelines as quickly as possible; any contracts entered under this delegation will be returned to the commission for ratification at the first August meeting.
