Lennox board honors Julian Rockey, adopts "Superhero Julian Day" resolution

The Lennox Unified School District Board of Education adopted a resolution May 14 recognizing May 17 as "Superhero Julian Day" in honor of former student Julian Rockey.
District staff recounted Julian’s diagnosis with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) in June 2014 and his death on June 2, 2018. The resolution notes that Julian attended Lenox schools, loved school, and inspired a community observance in which district staff, students and families wore superhero shirts on May 16 to honor his legacy. Julian’s older brother, Jesus Moreno, addressed the board at the meeting and thanked the district for ongoing support; Moreno told the board he had just completed his first year of college at Cal State University and thanked staff for the education and community backing his family has received.
The resolution was moved and seconded during the meeting and carried by roll call vote with board members recorded in favor. The board president asked Julian's parents and family members to be acknowledged at the dais following the vote.
The adoption is commemorative and does not create new district programs or budget obligations. Staff said the resolution is intended to raise awareness about DIPG and to recognize the Rockey family’s community contributions.
