Lennox board to consider student-member bylaw; staff to prepare middle-school version for June

The Lennox Unified School District Board of Education directed the superintendent’s office May 14 to bring back a draft board bylaw allowing a student member of the board for a first reading in June. The board discussed a California School Boards Association (CSBA) model policy — designed for high school students — and asked staff to adapt the language for a middle-school representative.
District staff explained that when adapting the CSBA model, the board must specify: the grade-level eligible to serve; the selection process (application, petition or nomination); length of term; training requirements; whether the student may vote on personnel or other sensitive matters; and processes for removal. Staff noted the CSBA template includes provisions such as compensation or high-school credit that would not apply to middle school and must be removed or revised.
Board members asked staff to draft the adapted policy for a first reading at the board’s June 10 meeting and to return for final action at the subsequent June meeting that includes the budget adoption. Staff said they will consult CSBA guidance and include training components and clear role descriptions. The board did not vote to adopt the policy on May 14; the action was instruction to prepare a version for formal consideration.
