Resident urges city to act on North Main Street corridor plan after six months

A Fond du Lac resident asked the City Council to report back on marketing and implementation steps for the North Main Street corridor plan and suggested pursuing tax incremental financing to attract developers.
Laura DeGaulier, a Fond du Lac resident, asked the City Council on May 14 to report back at the next meeting on progress toward implementing the North Main Street corridor plan and to begin marketing the site to developers.
DeGaulier told council members that the corridor plan, which was developed by a consultant with public input, “should not be allowed to gather dust.” She said, “It has been 6 months since the item was on the agenda. Please give us a report at the next council meeting as to what has been done to market this plan and or let the developers of Wisconsin know that we have a plan.”
The comment noted that the site was identified in a housing study as an opportunity site and said it could be eligible for tax incremental financing (TIF). DeGaulier recommended the city market the area online and, if eligible, establish a TIF district “as soon as possible as yet another attraction to developers.”
City Clerk Ms. Hefter called DeGaulier to the lectern during the audience comment period; no council action or staff response was taken at the meeting on DeGaulier’s request.
The corridor plan was described in public comments as having been designed with citizen input via an online survey and at least one public meeting. DeGaulier emphasized that, beyond marketing, the city should invite ideas from developers to move the plan toward implementation.
No ordinance, funding allocation, motion, or staff directive related to the North Main Street corridor plan was adopted or recorded during the May 14 meeting.
