The Board of Polyquarks and Capital Assets on May 13 approved the purchase of a Steel Wrist X18 tilt-rotor attachment from Steel Wrist Inc. for $56,752.50.
The purchase was presented as part of the 2025 capital improvement (CIP) budget; staff said $60,000 had been budgeted for the attachment. Staff described the device as an attachment that allows excavator arms to move more like a wrist instead of only vertically, which they said will let ditching and culvert crews work more efficiently at roadside and switch attachments more quickly.
Staff said the attachment reduces the need to return machines to the shop to change attachments, saving time, and could improve safety by reducing equipment movement in work zones. Two quotes were sought; Steel Wrist’s price was lower than an alternate from Fabik Cat and came within the adopted budget, staff said.
Board member Marshall moved to approve the purchase; the motion passed by roll call with the members present voting in favor.
The equipment purchase will be paid from the department’s CIP allocation for 2025; staff did not specify an installation or training timeline at the meeting.
