District Unveils Data Dashboard; Attendance Rate Up 8% From Last Year

Evergreen Public Schools presented a new district data dashboard May 13 and reported a measurable increase in student attendance: the districtwide rate of students attending at least 90% of the time is up about 8% compared with the prior year.
Dr. Fox, director of Teaching, Learning and Equity, introduced the dashboard as a tool aligned to district strategic goals to make progress visible to the public and staff. Dr. Fox said the dashboard is intended to present high‑level indicators tied to continual improvement and to help the community track progress toward student success.
Doctor Fowler demonstrated the dashboard visuals and said the tool aggregates qualitative and quantitative metrics across strategic plan goal areas. Assistant Director of Student Services Jason Castro reported the attendance gains, saying, "Our attendance rate is up 8% from last year to this year." Castro clarified the metric measures the percentage of students attending 90% or more of school days and said that 28 of 32 school buildings showed improvement in March data.
Castro described school‑level practices that supported the gains: monthly recognition (the “Alpha Attendance Award” or "Big Check Day"), daily signage of building attendance rates, grade‑level competitions, letters recognizing improved attendance, identified adult supports for students and consistent family messaging. The presentation included photos and a video of school award events used to encourage attendance.
Dr. Fox also noted the district uses student‑voice measures (YouthTruth) and that a spring YouthTruth report will be presented at a future meeting. Staff said the dashboard is one of several tools used to monitor interim assessments and student perspectives.
The board received the informational update; no vote was required.
