District outlines student assistance program; Cairn liaison serves secondary buildings

Dr. Kristen Horton, director of people services, described the district’s Student Assistance Program (SAP) and its partnership with the Cairn Foundation to provide a SAP liaison five days a week in secondary buildings.
Horton said the SAP liaison conducts one-hour behavioral-health screenings, runs psychoeducational prevention groups (coping skills, anxiety, substance misuse), leads SAP team maintenance and connects families to community resources. The liaison works across secondary buildings and supports three elementary schools via Creative Health in Montgomery County.
Horton said the liaison’s work includes school-based counseling referrals and community outpatient connections; she reported that at the high school alone approximately 300 students were referred to SAP during the year, some of whom were connected to services or participated in groups. The Cairn‑provided liaison is funded through an outside agreement; Dr. Horton said the district will bring that agreement forward at the legislative meeting for board consideration.
