Council approves five-year contract with Axon for body cameras, Tasers and evidence services

The South Beloit City Council approved a services and purchase agreement April 7 with Axon Enterprise, Inc. to continue providing body-worn cameras, Tasers, evidence management software and related services.
Police leadership said the existing contract had two years remaining and that renewing now with a five-year extension would provide upgraded body-worn cameras and Tasers immediately; staff said the five-year deal was estimated to cost only about $691.18 more in total over the five-year term than waiting and upgrading later. The contract covers hardware, redaction software and cloud storage of recorded evidence.
Council members and the chief discussed training and hands-on testing of the devices. The chief said Axon is the vendor for body cameras and Tasers and that the equipment and software are intended to support investigations and evidence management; one council member commented that Tasers are “better than using guns.”
The resolution passed and staff will execute the contract and schedule any needed training or demonstrations for council or staff.
