Council approves purchase of strip of land at 663 South Bluff for lift station project

The South Beloit City Council on April 7 approved Ordinance 28-43, authorizing a real-estate contract to purchase a narrow strip of property at 663 South Bluff Street needed for a new lift station and force main.
Staff said the parcel is a small strip that contains a house, the lift-station site, generator and electrical equipment and reaches back toward the Rock River where the new force main will cross. Public works staff and consultants told the council this alignment offered the shortest river crossing and the most direct connection to the city’s plant, and that buying the parcel would avoid more costly alternatives — staff estimated the decision “saving us over a million and a half” compared with other routes.
Council approved the $15,000 purchase price. Staff said they are negotiating temporary easements with the adjacent mobile-home park for shared access; those easements would not transfer property ownership. Project proponents also said the new lift station will replace two older stations and position the city for future west-side expansion.
The ordinance passed on the council vote and the purchase moves the sewer-force-main and lift-station project forward toward design and construction.
