Council approves promotion for police detective sergeant; officer sworn in

The South Beloit City Council approved creating and filling a detective sergeant position April 7 and promoted a 20-year department veteran who was sworn in at the meeting.
Police leadership said the detective-sergeant slot had been a department priority for several years to improve investigative capacity. The chief described the chosen candidate, Paul Mead, as “highly trained” and noted his membership in the Illinois Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force and the Winnebago-Boone County integrity task force.
Council members approved the hire at a stated hourly rate of $44.92; the council then administered an oath of office and the new detective-sergeant took the oath in open session. The chief thanked the council for creating the position and said external reviewers praised Mead’s promotional interview performance.
No further actions were required at the meeting; the new detective sergeant will assume investigative duties and participate in regional task-force work described by department leadership.
