Commission adds $10,000 to Camp SOAR budget after presentation on youth program growth

Camp SOAR director Shelby Holt asked the Fayette County Commission for continued support for the six-week day camp for 9–12 year olds at Fayette County Park and requested an additional $7,000 to cover personnel, activities and scholarships. The commission approved adding $10,000 to previously committed funding, bringing the county allocation for the program this year to $40,000.
Holt described the program’s structure — four daily stations (creation, education, recreation and relaxation), weekly adventure field trips (zip lining, paddling, mountain biking and other activities) and a counselor-training track for 13–14 year-old volunteers. She reported growth from 44 campers in year one to 65 in year two and said 80% of campers used scholarship funds. The camp fee is $75 per week but scholarship levels allow attendance as low as $7.50 per week.
Commissioners praised the program’s reach and asked how the camp publicizes sign-ups; staff and the director said they use social media, school channels and word-of-mouth. The commission moved and seconded an increase of $10,000 to support the camp; the motion passed by voice vote.
The commission agreed to continue support for three years if possible; staff will coordinate any further budget paperwork and outreach to schools and local media to boost registration.
