Representatives of Active Southern West Virginia briefed the Fayette County Commission on the nonprofit’s programming, volunteer network and recent participation data.
The presenter described the organization’s reach across Southern West Virginia, noting 2,000 programs offered in 2023 (1,200 in 2024 with an expected decline in 2025), 483 volunteers for the kids run-club program, 61 community-captain volunteers for weekly activities, and 2,700 users of an online membership platform. The group said its events and races produced local economic benefits, and that a recent race delivered an estimated $340,000 return on investment for the region; the commission had previously awarded a grant that allowed the organization to purchase timing equipment.
Active Southern West Virginia highlighted program variety being planned in Fayette County: water aerobics, paddle boarding, pickleball, Tai Chi, walking and cycling groups, and volunteer certification support (e.g., Tai Chi and arthritis programming). Presenters emphasized partnerships with county parks, schools and the Fayette County Health Department and said volunteers receive training and certification funded by the organization.
Commissioners thanked presenters and were invited to publicize the nonprofit’s online membership and monthly newsletter. The group announced a volunteer-focused fundraiser in August and encouraged county support for volunteer-supplied programming in local venues.
