The Palm Beach County Planning Commission voted to initiate a county text amendment to update the county's water supply facilities work plan, a step required by Florida law after regional water planners adopted an updated Lower East Coast water-supply plan.
Deputy Director Jeff Gagnon told the commission the initiation step authorizes staff to prepare a full analysis and staff report: "The initiation step is really the first in the county's text amendment process. It's required for all text and map amendments and is needed for county proposed or privately proposed items." He also emphasized that "initiation of an item does not equal board approval."
Gagnon said the work is tied to the South Florida Water Management District adoption last September of the Lower East Coast water supply plan and to a statutory deadline that requires Palm Beach County to adopt its revisions within 18 months, targeting adoption by March 2026. The plan update will project future water demands, examine source options, and coordinate population and user-agreement projections.
The commission voted to initiate the work and directed staff to proceed with the analysis and return with a detailed staff report and recommendations.
