Board members received construction updates May 8 as work on the Pleasant Valley High School renovation continues and additional facility issues emerged during inspections.
Buildings and grounds committee members reported that the new addition is near completion—painting and epoxy floors are done and the district expects occupancy in early June barring weather delays. At the meeting, staff and board members also described an unanticipated sewer blockage and the discovery of additional piping issues during the renovation scope. "As inspections went forward, additional things [were] found... to make the project complete and have long life, it is beneficial to do it to prevent future damage and maintenance costs," a facilities representative (Randy) told the board.
Board members asked about locker capacity and student storage during construction. Administrators said lockers will be available at the renovated high school but the overall number will be slightly reduced; the district plans to prioritize seniors for locker assignments during transition. The board discussed whether to allow students to carry backpacks while construction temporarily limits hallway and locker access; Dr. Conrad said the district consulted safety staff and would continue community and staff communications. "Once the child gets into the school with their backpack... it's all about accessibility," he said, adding that existing security patrols and procedures remain in place.
The renovations are being funded primarily with bond proceeds allocated to the high‑school project. Business staff noted those bonds will be spent over the next two years and that the district plans to transfer general fund dollars to capital reserve to cover other projects without new borrowing.
Next steps: administrators will publish construction updates on the district website, continue coordinating with contractors and community stakeholders, and provide clearer communications about locker assignments, backpack expectations and traffic changes while construction continues.
