Former councilor and CFO Sue Thomas appointed Bedford town treasurer

Sue Thomas, a longtime Bedford resident and former elected official, interviewed April 20 for the town treasurer vacancy and was later appointed by the Town Council.
Thomas told the council she has lived in Bedford since October 1989, has served on the school board and town council in the past and ran the finances of a private business for roughly 30 years as its chief financial officer. "I have a degree in finance. I've worked in corporate finance," Thomas said during her interview, and added she retired February 15 and wants to remain involved in town service.
Thomas said the treasurer role is not a heavy time commitment and that she would support Town Manager Rick Sawyer and the director of finance as needed. "With a background in finance, any input, or anything that Matt would need going forward and Rick would need, I would be here," she said.
Later in the meeting the council moved to appoint Susan (Sue) Thomas as town treasurer for a term to expire in May 2026. The motion carried on a voice/roll-call vote. Councilors recorded their votes in favor and the motion passed.
There was no formal discussion or amendments to the appointment recorded in the public minutes. Thomas’ interview and her stated finance background were entered into the record at the council’s interview session prior to the evening’s agenda.
