Chief Tucker told the Greenland Board of Selectmen that the town has acquired three solar speed-display signs and is preparing to install them at town-controlled locations.
Chief Tucker said the signs are larger and heavier than anticipated and are stored in the police sally port while crews prepare posts and mounts. The signs are solar-powered, portable (considered temporary), and typically deployed one-way; the chief said they will be placed on the town portion of Bayside Road and on Portsmouth Avenue (the portion between Newington Road and the Portsmouth line), with a third location to be determined based on traffic data and complaints.
The chief cautioned that signs cannot be installed on state DOT roads without meeting MUTCD and DOT requirements; that prevented earlier ideas to place units on Winnacunnet or Dearborn (both state roads). The signs include a blue flashing light option and can display messages; municipalities often adjust activation thresholds (for example, not showing speeds below a threshold) to preserve battery life.
Installation was expected as soon as posts and mounting hardware are available and weather permits; the chief said crews hoped to deploy units before the end of the month.
