The Greenland Board of Selectmen on May 5 authorized officials to move forward with resurfacing the town tennis courts and adding four pickleball courts, with a contract cost not to exceed the town's $35,000 Recreation Capital allocation and trustees authorized to release funds to the capital reserve.
The authorization follows a March 2025 vote by town voters to transfer $35,000 from the unreserved fund balance to the Recreation Capital Improvement account. Staff presented results of an informal RFP process that produced two viable proposals and recommended using an "armor" crack-repair system and roll-away nets to allow tennis and pickleball to coexist.
A town staff presenter said, "what we're recommending today is that we invest the $28,298 for New England seal coating, to use the armor crack repair system." The presenter told the board vendors recommended striping four pickleball courts on the existing tennis footprint and using roll-away nets so the different net heights would not pull anchors or damage equipment.
Staff said the armor system is preferred for New England climates because it overlays fiberglass over cracks; one presenter told the board that vendors estimated a resurfacing life of about seven to nine years if the repair holds. The presenter also said scheduling is weather-dependent and crews could begin work in June if conditions permit.
Board members and public attendees raised fundraising and community feedback. Staff reported small local donations and rental revenue have offset some costs and that three passionate tennis players voiced opposition to placing pickleball courts on the basketball court. The presenter said the basketball courts are in better condition and could be resurfaced later if funds allow; an offhand vendor estimate for that work was about $6,200.
At the meeting a motion was made to authorize resurfacing with a cost not to exceed $35,000 and to authorize the trustees of the trust fund to release up to $35,000 to the Recreation Capital Reserve; the motion was seconded and carried. The presenter said the town's capital balance would remain approximately $6,700 after the planned transaction.
Work is expected to start after a contractor confirms a date and as soon as weather allows; the board directed staff to proceed under the approved authorization.
