Late in the meeting, members of the Board of Zoning Appeals and city planning staff discussed the frequency of infill‑lot variance requests and options for code changes, and tentatively set a training workshop date.
City planning staff told the board that recent code enforcement and applications show nonconforming infill lots are a recurring pain point. "We did just close the RFP for the zoning regulations, and we got 5 respondents," staff said, adding that a larger code review is forthcoming and that infill lot standards are a commonly reported issue.
Board members suggested multiple paths: members who also sit on the Planning Commission could raise a proposed text amendment under that body’s old/new business, or the board could continue handling variances while staff pursues a formal text amendment through the Planning Commission and City Council. One board member said a possible approach would be to allow infill lots to conform if the proposal matches the average lot dimensions of the immediate neighborhood.
Separately, staff and board members discussed scheduling a training workshop. The board tentatively agreed "Let's plan for the 20 second" at 05:30 (quoted wording from the meeting); staff said they would send a confirmation email once the presenter’s availability and meeting room were confirmed.
No formal directive or ordinance was adopted at the meeting; staff encouraged members to bring the matter to Planning Commission or request a text amendment through the standard review process if they wanted code changes considered.
