This spring in the St. Croix Valley, the University of Wisconsin–River Falls music department assembled a roughly 30-piece ensemble of students, faculty, area instructors and alumni to record three student compositions, two written for video games and one for a short film, a board member reported.
The recordings were produced as part of a department project that the board member said was featured in Wisconsin Arts News. Board members described the work as notable mainly because two compositions were for video games rather than traditional concert or film media, and because the experience gives student composers commercial portfolio material as they pursue jobs.
Board members said the department hopes to combine resources with the University of Wisconsin–Stout, which has a game-creation program, to broaden opportunities for students. The board member who briefed the group said the project gives students “great portfolios” as they enter the job market.
The report included no mention of funding sources, contracts, or formal agreements between the institutions; board members described the activity as a department initiative and noted only that a collaboration with UW–Stout was being discussed.
No formal board action or directive concerning the recordings or inter‑campus collaboration was reported during the meeting.
