Scottsbluff City Council approved community grant funding for two regional sporting events: $8,750 to the Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) Foundation to support marketing and to match an InterNebraska intern grant for the Monument Marathon, and $5,100 to 308 United Softball to assist with umpire lodging and fees for the SummerSlam softball tournament.
Jennifer Reisick, foundation director at WNCC, told the council the Monument Marathon is in its 14th year and is a major annual fundraiser for WMCC students; the event drew a record 600 runners in 2024 and about 80% of runners the prior year came from outside Scottsbluff County. Reisick said the requested $8,750 will primarily fund targeted out‑of‑area marketing and help the foundation match an Intern Nebraska award to hire a summer marketing intern.
Krista Sarchette, president of 308 United Softball, presented the SummerSlam request of $5,100 to help cover umpire fees and lodging. She said the tournament has grown since 2020 and that the organization has increased umpire pay to $60 per game (championship games at $75) to attract qualified officials; the requested funds will cover an expected rise in umpire costs and associated hotel rooms.
Council members discussed lodging‑tax and tourism connections and staff said the requests fit the community programming objective funded by occupational tax revenues. Both funding requests were approved by council vote.
