Board moves to broaden firearms policy to cover district property; amended language to return for development

The School Board of Palm Beach County on May 7 directed staff to revise proposed Policy 2.383 (firearms and weapons) to make clear the prohibition applies to all district-owned property, and voted to bring the amended policy back for formal development.
Board member Matthew Lane pulled the item for clarification and asked whether the policy’s prohibition on firearms was limited to school facilities. General counsel Sean Bernard said the intention was to cover district property broadly and offered proposed language changes. Policy manager Chief Mooney (policy office) said the recommended edits would insert “school district property” and “or district property” in two places to make the scope explicit.
Lane moved to amend the draft with the clarified language; the motion was seconded by Karen Branch and the board voted to return the item with the amendment. The board then approved development of the revised policy as amended with a second motion by Whitfield and Branch; both votes were unanimous.
The measure will return to the board as a developed policy for further consideration. No final ban or enforcement mechanism was adopted at this meeting; the board approved only the direction to staff to draft the revised language and present the developed policy for review and vote.
