The mayor told the council Bernsen has worked for the city for nearly 30 years, with a brief interval in Salem, and that the city combined two roles — assistant director of community development and assistant director of planning — into a single position following the retirement or departure of Brendan Callahan. The mayor said Bernsen’s experience with city projects, boards and commissions made her a “great fit” for the consolidated role.
Councilors who spoke in support said they had worked with Bernsen for years and praised her knowledge of department operations and boards and commissions. Councilor Gamache moved approval of the appointment; Council President Julie Daigle took a roll call vote and the council approved the motion 11–0. The appointment’s term was stated to expire Dec. 31, 2025.
