The Development Review Committee on May 9 approved a permit for an Independence Day celebration at Fisherman’s Village, and staff said the requested road closures will be scheduled for Punta Gorda City Council review on June 4, 2025.
The committee’s approval followed staff reports that Urban Design’s comments were addressed and that police and fire staffing plans remain needed for the fireworks display. “Last year we had four officers there. Two are required at Marion and Maud from 7pm to 10pm for traffic control,” a police representative said during the meeting. A fire department representative said fire crews would cover crowd control and the fireworks, noting, “We’re going to have three firefighters from 12 to 10 to landside, and then one’s going to be on the boat with PD to the fireworks show.”
Kathy Burnham, identified at the meeting as marketing manager for Fisherman’s Village, confirmed event coordination and thanked staff. Public Works said Dave Myers had submitted an invoice for barricades and asked applicants to coordinate billing and ordering through his office. Staff said if city personnel cannot fill all requested slots, they will contact the sheriff’s office for assistance.
Committee members moved and seconded approval of the permit; the motion carried on a voice vote. Staff noted the permit will go on the June 4 council agenda for final action on road closures.
What the committee required: applicants must provide required public-safety staffing, coordinate with Public Works for Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) orders and submit any outstanding invoices and insurance documentation needed for City records. Fire and police said their staffing requirements and any invoice adjustments would determine final billing after the event.
The committee did not set fees or change the proposed event schedule at the meeting; those operational details (staffing confirmations, final invoices and council action on road closures) remain outstanding and must be completed before the event.
