The bill would prohibit acquiring pond sliders after a specified cutoff date and give the Fish & Wildlife Department authority to set rules for import, possession, sale and exemptions. Luke Groff, a herpetologist with the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department and the Agency of Natural Resources, told the committee Vermont has “40 native herp species, including 19 reptile species and 21 amphibian species,” and described slow maturity and low reproductive output that make those species vulnerable to overharvest and collection.
