At the May 6 select board meeting, the Town of Rutland voted to withdraw from the Otter Creek Communication Union District. The board authorized the chair to sign the withdrawal paperwork and included a formal thank-you to the local representative who had served on the district board.
Town Administrator Bill Sweet said the town’s broadband needs had largely been met and the district’s goals had shifted to other priorities. Marcia (last name recorded in meeting packet) had offered to remain but indicated a preference to step down; the select board agreed that withdrawal and the ability to reenroll later was the appropriate step.
The board’s vote to withdraw was passed by consensus and staff completed a form to notify the district. Sweet said the town can rejoin the district by board action in the future if local needs change.
Why it matters: Communication union districts have been a vehicle for regional broadband planning; this withdrawal indicates that Rutland Town believes its broadband coverage is adequate for now and prefers not to remain in the formal district structure while retaining the option to rejoin.
