Town awards $170,456 contract to dredge Kiwanis Pond at Nature Center

The Board of Selectmen on May 6 approved a $170,456 contract with Peter Alani Inc., plus a $25,000 contingency, to dredge Kiwanis Pond at the New Canaan Nature Center and perform related site improvements.
Staff said the town solicited bids and received five proposals that ranged from roughly $170,000 to $447,000. The low bid from Peter Alani was $170,004.56; staff recommended adding a contingency for unforeseen work. The town previously secured inland wetland and Planning & Zoning permits required for the dredging and for placement of excavated material on site.
Scope and timing: the work will remove sediment and phragmites from the pond, regrade an approximately one‑acre adjacent meadow (raising grades by about two feet) and replant with a wetland/pollinator seed mix. Staff and nature center representatives requested an August start to minimize disruption to summer programming; expected on‑site work is four to six weeks.
Why it matters: staff said visible sediment accumulation and vegetation growth have reduced the pond’s depth and habitat quality. The project also aims to create a larger, vegetated pollinator meadow from the placed material.
Board action: motion to award the contract and contingency passed unanimously. Staff will coordinate construction timing with the Nature Center and ensure permitting conditions are met.
