Board authorizes hiring search for deputy recorder rather than chief deputy

Houston County commissioners voted to change the county's open position search in the recorder's office from a chief deputy recorder to a deputy recorder.
Michelle, the county recorder who recently moved into the elected role after serving as chief deputy, explained that applicants received in the current recruitment round lacked the legal experience necessary for a chief-deputy role. She and county staff proposed hiring an additional deputy recorder first to build institutional knowledge and create a promotion pathway to chief deputy later.
Commissioners agreed the approach widens the candidate pool and allows the office to train and evaluate deputies before elevating one to chief deputy responsibilities that would include stepping in for the recorder if needed. A motion to change the search to a deputy recorder passed by voice vote.
The board instructed staff to update recruitment materials and continue the hiring process under the deputy recorder classification.
