Committee briefed on possible state consolidation of CDBG funds and regional distribution

Polk County’s planner updated the committee on state-level discussion to consolidate local Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds into a state-administered regional program.
Tim Anderson, county planner, told the committee that substantial unspent CDBG funds remain statewide and that the state is considering closing local CDBG accounts and replacing them with a new low- and moderate-income housing program administered at the regional level. He said there is significant money available statewide but that the program’s eligibility and distribution mechanisms are still under development.
Committee members expressed concern that consolidation could concentrate funds away from local needs. Planner Tim Anderson said the state intends regional distribution and that counties should seek representation on the regional consortium to help secure local allocations; staff noted Chubbuck County Housing Authority currently manages the regional distribution for the area and that representation on the regional board would be important.
Staff committed to monitoring developments and to inform county administration and supervisors as new details emerge; no committee action was taken at the meeting.
