Board reviews several policy updates, moves immunization and related procedures to first reading

The board reviewed multiple policy and procedure updates and moved the student-immunization and life-threatening health conditions procedure forward to an action item first reading.

Diana, speaking for district nurses and health staff, said the immunization procedure retains the required immunization controls and that life-threatening health-condition plans come from health-care providers, so the district kept the procedure broad rather than attempting a narrow definition. She said nurses can produce a list of students not fully immunized within 24 hours and that the district reports numbers to the health department; the list is not published, she said.

Trustees also reviewed an updated nondiscrimination policy based on language from WASDA (Washington Association of School Directors) and discussed aligning its language with other district policies; board members asked staff to ensure consistent cross-references and to update specific named organizations in the text. The leave-sharing policy (5406) was presented to codify an existing form and align language with bargaining-unit terms. Administrators also placed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on record indicating teachers and the district will retain an early-release Wednesday schedule (rather than late start) for the remainder of the teachers' contract.

Board members voted to move the immunization/procedure item to a first reading; the other policy items were scheduled for subsequent readings or moved forward as first reads where indicated.
