Monroeville seeks additional grant for Turtle Creek footbridge connecting Valley Park to Westmoreland Heritage Trail

Council discussed a prospective pedestrian bridge across Turtle Creek at Valley Park that would connect a soccer field and skate park to the Westmoreland Heritage Trail. Staff said earlier estimates several years ago put the project near $500,000, but rising costs have increased the estimated total and staff are seeking additional grant funding to cover the difference.
Why it matters: the bridge would connect recreation facilities and an established trail system, improving nonmotorized access for residents and trail users. Staff said the borough currently has a roughly $250,000 grant for the project and identified sale proceeds from the Bel Air Pool as available municipal match; the borough plans to apply for an additional grant that is due by the end of the month to help close the funding gap.
Council did not adopt any resolution at the May 6 agenda-setting meeting; staff indicated a resolution authorizing the grant application will be considered at the May 13 meeting. Paul Estock and staff from the parks/engineering team have prepared documents for the grant application, and council asked staff to provide final grant paperwork and cost estimates in the May 13 packet.
