Planning staff provided an update on the City Center Green study, saying the city has identified two candidate locations for a potential green—one across Market Street from City Hall and another on what is currently the U·Mall (Boone) property—and has sketched potential park designs so Council can evaluate what it might fund.
Staff said a public forum had presented preliminary options and that the presentation and supporting materials would be posted online for public comment. The schedule calls for public comment to remain open through the second or third week in September, with staff compiling feedback and forwarding a recommendation to the City Council in October. Staff emphasized that land acquisition and any design or construction are not funded at this time and would require separate Council action and appropriation.
The presentation noted that consultants reviewed possible activities and site configurations for a town or city green and that materials will be posted to the city’s project webpage. A commissioner asked whether the planning commission has a formal role; staff replied the green is a City Council project but the commission is welcome to provide informal feedback or to request the item be placed on a future commission agenda for formal discussion.
Commissioners and staff discussed connectivity and pedestrian access across City Center, and several commissioners urged the public to review the consultant presentation once posted. One commissioner asked about the consultant’s past work and requested a résumé or website; staff said that information is generally available and will be shared.
There was no formal vote; staff will post the presentation, accept public comment through mid‑September and prepare a recommendation for Council consideration in October.
