Summary
Staff told the Coffee County highway meeting that crews have resumed mowing, added new employees, completed about 3.5 miles of paving and tar‑and‑chip work in recent weeks, and are drawing down an oil purchase line item that will reset July 1.
Matthew Benton, a staff member with Coffee County road operations, told the meeting that crews restarted mowing after the last meeting and have completed “about a little over 3 and a half miles” of paving in the past weeks.
“We've, started our mowing back in, I guess, right after the last meeting we had,” Benton said. He reported new crew members and named several staff: Kenneth, Steve Baer, Duffy and Dooley. Joe, another staff member in attendance, confirmed work on ditching and tile installation.
Benton said the crew completed about two miles of tar‑and‑chip work so far and is working on longer routes when weather allows. “We we started on a long road. I wanted them to got started kinda late and it's been raining,” he said, noting rain has limited paving days.
The meeting included a budget timing detail: Benton said the county’s oil and asphalt line item will be replenished July 1, but staff want to use remaining funds first. “I want to make sure we ran out of oil money on that line item to get all that we could get done with the money we had,” Benton said. He described recent purchases of multiple tanker loads of asphalt products, including CRS‑2 and AE‑3. The group estimated a tanker load of oil costs “somewhere around 16 or 17,000,” and Benton said they had bought “5 or 6 loads counting the CRS 2.”
Staff also discussed equipment performance. Benton said a new cutting head for a tractor acquired a few years ago is working better. The meeting touched on the batwing mower in use on wider rights‑of‑way and the ongoing need for tree cleanup after storms.
The meeting approved the agenda and the prior month’s minutes by voice vote. Jeff moved to accept the minutes; Harless seconded. The group set the next meeting for June 4 at 3 p.m. at Military Plaza and adjourned after motions and seconds to close the session.
The discussion primarily recorded operational updates and short‑term scheduling constraints; no new contracts or formal budget transfers were proposed or voted on at this meeting.
