Committee members used part of the May 8, 2025 meeting to share updates about volunteer efforts and community events connected to CPC-funded or conservation properties.
A member reported that a recent Earth Day cleanup removed substantial trash from the Otter River pool at the Crotty Ave Dam, calling it an interdepartmental effort involving Development Services, the Department of Public Works and the Light and Water department. The member said the site is much improved following the cleanup.
Members said the Xerces Society selected Dwelling Farm for a firefly monitoring event in June; the event will involve roughly eight volunteers working in partnership with the North County Land Trust. Members emphasized that the event is for monitoring and counting fireflies, not collecting them.
The committee discussed community-garden planning and possible small grants; members said they may pursue funding from the Community Foundation and noted that some funders require a matching grant. Parks and Recreation is also planning events: a community fair at Gilman Way in August and vendor outreach for the fair (no vendor fee for non-food vendors), and an opening day for the Gardner Farmers Market around May 17.
Members said Parks and Recreation will continue researching larger recreation projects such as a skate park or pump track, but those items are in early planning and contingent on grant opportunities and Parks and Recreation priorities.
Ending: Members closed member comments after exchanging dates and volunteer needs, and they reminded residents of the town meeting and election dates in mid-May.
